Topics Title
Mina Loy and Networked Modernisms
Description

An artist, poet, playwright, novelist, inventor, and entrepreneur, Mina Loy (1882-1966) was associated with a number of artistic and avant-garde movements (Art Nouveau, Futurism, Cubism, Dada, Surrealism, Neo-Dada); worked across literary genres and artistic media; and lived variously in Paris, Florence, Rome, New York, Buenos Aires, London, and Berlin from the 1910s to the 1950s. Her experimental writing, typified by radically new uses of language, typography, and page space, garnered attention for its bold feminism and innovative forms. Although Loy played a leading role in modernism, she has been relegated to minor parts in its histories and theories.  This class will study the work and life of Mina Loy as an entry point to a broader exploration of trans-Atlantic modernist networks. Loy's centrality to a number of moments in the history of modernism will allow us to chart a Loy-centric history of modernist "networks" as they were shaped by particular writers and artists, geographic locales, little magazines, salons, theaters, and art exhibitions. Ideally the class with Loy at its center will generate new ways of thinking about modernism. In addition to journals and analytical essays, each student will complete a research project about one of the figures in Loy's social and artistic network in either Paris or New York. The profiles of these figures and their relation to Loy will contribute to a digital visualization of Loy's social networks on the scholarly website Mina Loy: Navigating the Avant-Garde (mina-loy.com).
