Women in Literature:  American Women Writers and Sexuality

This course will examine narratives by American women that explore women’s desire, sexual expression, and identity.  We will read fiction, poetry, essays, and graphic novels that examine how American women’s sexuality has been affected by categories of gender, race, class, and nation. We will pay particular attention to narratives that explore same-sex desire.  Possible authors include:  Kate Chopin, Adrienne Rich, Toni Morrison, Audre Lorde, Dorothy Allison, Gloria Anzaldúa, Alison Bechdel, Beth Brant, and others.
