Larger than Life is an advanced undergraduate creative writing workshop for students who want to write engaging character-driven fiction. The writer Kristen Lamb notes that “Great fiction is fueled by bad decisions and human weakness,” and in this class we’ll learn to capture these human foibles and flaws while writing fiction about the heroes and antiheroes of your choosing. We’ll also read biographical short stories and novels about characters ranging from Amelia Earhart and Rudolf Nureyev to John Lennon and Jesse James, and we’ll look at how various authors integrate real-life facts and research with imaginative fiction. Over the course of the semester, students will write and workshop either three short stories or three novel chapters. All writers welcome!
