Description

Nineteenth-century British fiction from Jane Austen to the fin de siècle. One of the main themes of the course will be the bounds of realism: what's real about fiction, and how does fiction try to show us what's real? How do fantasy or ideology shape our sense of what's real? How does the real leave an imprint even on works that we might not consider narrowly realistic?
