- Early Irish Literature
In this introduction to the literature of medieval Ireland, we will draw from the major cycles of early Irish literature to read (in translation) about battles between heroes of this and the Otherworld; about CuChulain who chose fame over life and single-handedly kept the Connachtmen from invading while the Ulstermen recovered from their “birth pangs;” about the fate of kings who broke taboos; about Deirdre and Grainne, women who each brought ruin to her whole society by choosing the man she would love; about Finn mac Cumaill and his band of honor-bound outlaws; about the lives of saints Patrick, Collum Cille, and Brigid. We will study these heroes, kings, saints, and lovers with attention to the interplay of history, literature, folklore, and mythology.
