Renaissance Literature and the Environment
Description

This course will examine the relationship of Renaissance British culture to the natural world. We'll look at a selection of early modern plays, poems, and prose writing with particular attention to the themes of environments, ecologies, landscapes, cosmology, and nature. We'll look at maps, paintings, natural history, botanical books, recipes, books of secrets and cabinets of curiosity. We'll supplement our readings with current scholarship in ecocriticism.
