- Latino/a Literature (with an emphasis on Service-Learning)
This service-learning course provides an introduction to Latino/a literature written in English. By examining select novels, short stories, autobiographies, and plays we will focus on how Latino/a writers engage and attempt to disrupt the legacy of colonialism through writing. We will pay particular attention to narratives that examine the role of writing, reading, and education in Latino/a life. To learn the power of reading and writing first hand, students will be required to participate in a local Athens tutoring program for Latino/a students. By examining Latino/a literature and working closely with the local Latino/a population in Athens, students can expect to gain a greater understanding of Latino/a cultures and how writing and storytelling relate to those cultures.
